Inrate AG is an independent sustainability rating agency in German-and French-speaking Switzerland. It was formed in 2010 from the merger of INrate and CentreInfo. Inrate has 20 years of experience in linking profound sustainability knowledge to innovative research solutions for financial markets. Therefore, we are among the largest and most respected agencies in Europe.

We provide sustainability knowledge to redirect invested capital in the direction of a sustainable economy. This makes us an integral part of the global financial infrastructure.

Advisory Board/Council

The sustainability assessment by Inrate is closely accompanied by an independent advisory board. This body takes care that the results of the sustainability research meet the set objectives. To ensure this, the approach and method is essentially determined by the advisory board.

The advisory board is composed of competent and experienced specialists within their respective areas of  sustainability, such as Water- and energy economy.

2010: The merger of INrate and CentreInfo combines over 20 years experience under one roof, which ensures faster product launches in the ESG Research.

2009: The first methodology for sustainability assessment of Private-equity investments.

2008: INrate and CentreInfo agree on a strategic co-operation and expand their services. The two companies together form an inter-national research pool.

2007: CentreInfo is the first vendor with a complete research to companies in emerging markets.

2006: INrate launches first products to important issues of sustainability trends – i.e. water, climate change, consumption and mobility.

2005: Centre Info launched envIMPACT, the first quantitative model to assess the impact of climate change across the entire value chain of companies.

2003: Due to the successful development of the SiRi group SiRi members found an independent, profit orientated firm, in which CentreInfo is acting as a principal shareholder and managing partner.

2001: Official founding of INrate and implementation of a new social-rating methodology. An independent advisory board is formed to oversee the entire rating process.

1998: INrate developed the unique best-in-service approach, which set formal new incentives for the necessary structural change to a more sustainable economic.

1995: The Swiss pension fund NEST and the sustainability consulting institute-INFRAS establish a foundation for sustainable investment products (hereinafter INrate) and evaluate invest-ments according to environmental criteria.

1994: Based on the Brundtland report CentreInfo creates, the first methodology for sustainability assessment of companies.

1990: CentreInfo is founded as a think-tank of the Foundation Duchemain, which is aimed at promoting sustainable develop-ment.


Our research approach was steadily developed and regularly updated over the past 20 years. Not only our own experience and know-how flow into the approach, but also the knowledge of our international partners. Our ESG parameters are checked regularly for correctness and validity. Moreover, the research process is closely accompanied by a independent advisory board. It ensures that the final product meets the highest industry and neutrality standards.

We have integrated environmental, social and governance aspects in our research process. We focus on company policies, management, and published facts and focus our attention on the specific design of processes, products & services. We know that each sector and each company faces specific risks and opportunities. Therefore, we evaluate how a company manages sustainability risks from a sector-specific perspective and whether it uses the SRI opportunities.

The overall assessment is made up of a product evaluation and an assessment of management systems and processes of the company. Overall, the criteria are combined into seven overarching themes.

The product evaluation looks at the activities of a company. There are approximately 500 activities, depending on the activity associated fields. These activities result in a rating in our impact matrix depending on the environmental and social effects. There are also sector based criteria for the assessment of product-optimisation. This innovative process allows us to make a more sophisticated assessment compared with conventional methods.

Within the assessment of management systems and processes, six themes are distinguished:

  • Reporting: Is the company reporting on their CSR activities, is the report guided by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and is there an independent audit?
  • Ethics: Evaluated are inter alia, business ethics, competition policy and the responsibility to customers.
  • Working conditions: safety, equality, freedom of association and various other sub-themes are used to evaluate both the company and for the suppliers .
  • Environment: The evaluation of environmental performance is done along the entire life cycle.
  • Society: Evaluation of the handling of the society, especially with regard to all common-recognized human rights.
  • Governance: Analyses will include the composition of the Board, the remuneration report and the management of shareholders.


With our sustainability assessment, we identify sustainability pioneers, followers and so-called stragglers who do not consider the issue of sustainability in its totality. We investigate how companies integrate sustainability into their product and services, and in its strategy and work processes.
